Bunker play is usually the weakest part of most golfer’s game. But with a bit of practice the controlled splash shot can be played to any point on the green, allowing you to position the ball. Just look at the distance point where you want to land the ball – this will determine how much you open the clubface.

For a shot like this, I will open the clubface a lot and lay it almost flat.

My body is aiming left (open) and I have good balance, with a little more weight on my left foot – this helps take the club down into the sand.

The amount of sand I take depends on the distance. On longer shots, the clubface and body will be squarer and I will take less sand. For shorter shots, I will open the face and body, and take more sand.
